It is great to have a face full of expression but sometimes the downside of an expressive face may be lines that form. Lines can at times be attractive and give our face unique character but some may also detract from our appearance. Lines and creases that detract from our appearance are easily treated with a muscle relaxant or a dermal filler.
Treatment of lines with botulinum toxins such as BotoxⓇ or DysportⓇ, is proving to be a very popular treatment because it inactivates the muscle action, which ultimately prevents the creation of lines or prevents existing lines from worsening/deepening. Consistent action of the muscle impacts on the skin, causing deep and fine lines. Some of these lines may form between the eyebrows giving the person an angry look. Other common areas are horizontal lines on the forehead and wrinkles that form around the eyes, described as crow’s feet.
Are muscle relaxants safe?
Botulinum toxin has been available and used in the medical field for over 25 yrs. Its original use was for treatment of non-cosmetic conditions such as cerebral palsy, facial tics or twitches, migraine, Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), Temporomandibular joint pain and teeth grinding. These conditions were successfully and safely treated, long before its more recent use for the aesthetic treatment of fine lines and wrinkles.
Anti-wrinkle treatment with botulinum toxin is a very popular and effective treatment for softening the appearance of lines and may also prevent new ones forming. Before injecting with botulinum toxin the patient would be asked to fill out a health questionnaire, to establish the suitability and safety for the treatment. Anti-wrinkle treatments are not given to women that are pregnant or breast feeding due to the lack of supporting evidence done in this area.
